"Firewalls"
Looking back, one can still remember a time without computers.
Now, over 20 years later, computers mark the home and office landscape
at every turn. Yet, despite such advancements, the computer industry
is still in its infancy.
Terms such as computer illiterate have been coined to describe
many people who know very little about this technology. In fact,
not just a few who have had computers for some time have coined
themselves with this term.
Enter a new technology to the scene: “High-Speed Internet
access.” Combining the World-Wide-Web with High-speed Internet
access and new inexperienced computer users (probably many experienced
ones as well) has proved to be very lucrative for people who call
themselves, or have been called, HACKERS.
Ask yourself: “Am I on the internet and if so, do I fully
understand how the internet and my computer interact? Am I sharing
valuable information or even my entire computer with the world?
Do I want anyone to be able to access my Excel spread sheet containing
my budget or my personal letters?”
Chances are you answered NO! to the last question. But, like it
or not, you might be sharing this information with the world!
And more than just sharing it you may be advertising it! This
all without your knowledge. What you don’t know would shock
you! Consider the fact that even the Pentagon has its vulnerabilities.
So,
just how protected are you?
This leads me to the point of this article. There are ways to
protect your computer from prying eyes, or shall we say fingers,
on the Internet.
Firewall software can be easily installed on your computer. This
will dramatically improve your privacy and protect you from many
(unfortunately not all) hackers.
To obtain peace of mind, especially if you have High-Speed Internet
access at home or in your office, you should seriously consider
installing firewall software.
